Found this trilogy in Waterstones almost by accident. Naguib Mahfouz was the first ever Arab writer to win a Nobel Prize for literature in 1988. HIs work feels of the now, and yet he was born in 1911 and died in 2006.

I wasnt sure what to expect but there was something about the crit comments, by various newspapers that I respect, that made me want to buy all three and I am so very pleased I did, as they are exceptionally well written.

What you could describe as an ordinary Egyptian Muslim family living in the early part of the 20th century, what you get in this first book is the laying out of the complex differences, that I would say still exist today.

Women kept inside the home at all times, not even allowed to be seen staring at others from behind the balcony shutters. A strict, dominant and extreme Father, behavior for this family and others like it, was totally acceptable. Away from the home the Father is completely opposite, a man who lives a drunken and adulterous existence, along with his other friends, another acceptable fact..

The youngest son in this, the first book is eight, and like the rest of the family you are introduced to them in detail individually, but there is something about Kamal that I have now become hooked into

Yasin, a cruel and arrogant young man that gets away with appalling behavior towards women.

Dominated by religion, and the politics of the day, but as a reader you feel the hypocrisy by the way in which the men find it acceptable to live there lives.. But I also began to ask what the hell were we in Egypt for??

A MUST read I would say.

This series was the first example of Egyptian literature Ive read and I was amazed by it. Through the story of one traditional egyptian familys three generations, we go through an important era of the Egypts history. Not only was I able to have an idea of the ideology of the Egyptian people and the countrys history, but also able to experience a fine example of writing.

I wasnt completely sure if I would be able to connect with the story but the beautiful writing and believable real characters, I was unable to put the books down until I read the whole series. After I finished this series, I bought two other books from this very talented author and looking forward to read them as well. A fine piece of literature that I recommend to everyone.

Originally I couldnt get past page 56. I put this book aside for almost a month. At some point I became determined to see it through and got past the first 100 pages when something unbelievable happened...I became so wrapped up in the story and its characters, that I couldnt put the book down. The story/ies are told in great detail and the characters and culture was so hard to relate to, but in the end I found myself relating to them on some level. The book even had me in tears in many parts. Definitely amazing writing and storytelling. I have to read the next one. I have to know what the future holds for the family.
